Ranking the 32 NFL Teams Using the Dickinson Football Rating System
Yesterday I pushed out a short little post that projected which team will win Super Bowl LV based on the Dickinson Football Rating System. Today I figured I’d rank the entire league using the Dickinson System. There were a few oddities that jumped out at me.
The first aberration to catch my eye were the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to the Dickinson System, the Bucs are overachievers. Despite advancing to the Super Bowl, they are rated as just the 6th best team in the NFL overall (tied with the Cleveland Browns). You would expect a better rating for a Super Bowl participant.
Washington is also a bit quirky. They played their way into the top half of the 2021 player draft (pick #14) despite being rated as the 22nd worst team overall. I guess that’s what happens when a 7-9 record is good enough to be crowned division champions.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Cincinnati Bengals were big underachievers. The Dickinson System had the Bengals rated as the 21st best team in the league. Despite that they ended the regular season with a measly 4-11-1 record. A team rated as well as the Bengals probably should have knocked out two or three more wins.
The Pittsburgh Steelers were also disappointments. The Steelers earned a 20.882 Dickinson Rating – good enough for a solid #3 ranking in the NFL. There’s no way a #3 ranked team should be eliminated in the AFC Wild Card round of the playoffs.
